Do You Want Your CrossFit Coach to Be Honest with You or Lie to You?

At CrossFit Be Someone in Houston, we take pride in being more than just a gym. We’re a community of coaches and athletes committed to growth, accountability, and real results. But here’s the big question every athlete should ask themselves:

Do you want your CrossFit coach to be honest with you, or would you rather they lie to you?

Let’s explore both sides of that.

The Honest Coach

The honest coach is the one who tells you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear. This coach cares about your growth, your consistency, and your progress, even if it makes you uncomfortable.

“I’m just so busy right now.”
The truth? So is everyone else. You have a career, a family, obligations, we all do. But fitness doesn’t get easier to prioritize when life gets harder. The athletes who succeed are the ones who make time, not find it. That’s the beauty of CrossFit; you can get an incredible workout done in one hour. You just have to show up.

“I haven’t been feeling motivated.”
Motivation is unreliable. It fades. The athletes who transform their lives aren’t driven by motivation; they’re driven by discipline. You won’t always feel like working out, but showing up anyway is how you grow. You can’t wait for motivation, you create it through consistent action.

“I’m dealing with an injury.”
We get it, injuries happen. But there’s a difference between being injured and being inactive. If your shoulder hurts, we can train your legs. If your knee is sore, we can work your upper body. Avoiding the gym altogether because of one injury only sets you back further. Consistency looks different at times, but it should never stop completely.

“Life has been really hard lately.”
We understand life gets heavy. That’s exactly why you need to keep moving. Exercise is one of the best outlets for stress, frustration, and mental fatigue. The hardest seasons are when you need fitness the most. Walking into the gym might not fix your problems, but it will absolutely give you the strength to handle them better.

“I just can’t afford it right now.”
This one stings, but here’s the truth, most people don’t have a money problem, they have a priority problem. Many people spend hundreds on eating out, streaming services, or things that don’t contribute to their long-term health. The cost of not taking care of your body now will always be higher later through medications, doctor visits, and missed opportunities to live fully.

“I feel burnt out.”
Burnout often comes from imbalance, not effort. You might be overcommitted outside the gym, under-recovering, or putting unrealistic expectations on yourself. That’s why communication with your coach matters. We can adjust your intensity, scale your workouts, or add recovery days, but disappearing isn’t the answer.

“I’m not seeing results fast enough.”
This is one of the most common frustrations, but let’s be honest, you didn’t build your current habits overnight, and your results won’t come overnight either. Progress is often slow, subtle, and invisible until one day it’s undeniable. The athletes who stay consistent, eat well, sleep well, and trust the process are the ones who get the transformation everyone else quits before seeing.

That’s the honest coach. The one who holds the mirror up, even when you don’t like the reflection.

The “Lying” Coach

Now let’s look at the other side, the coach who lies to you. Not because they’re mean, but because it’s easier.

“I’m just so busy right now.”
Oh, totally understandable! You’ve got a lot on your plate. Take a few months off. The gym will always be here when you’re ready.

“I haven’t been feeling motivated.”
Of course, motivation is tough. You’ll come back when you feel inspired again. Just rest until you feel like it.

“I’m dealing with an injury.”
Oh no! You should definitely stop all movement until it’s 100% better. Don’t worry about training around it or staying consistent. You’ll bounce right back later.

“Life has been really hard lately.”
You deserve a break. The gym can wait. Take some time off until life calms down, then you can focus on fitness again.

“I just can’t afford it right now.”
That makes sense. CrossFit isn’t for everyone. Maybe once your finances stabilize, you can look into it again, even though your health might not be in the same place by then.

“I feel burnt out.”
Totally fair. Just take as long as you need off. No plan, no structure, just rest indefinitely. That always helps, right?

“I’m not seeing results fast enough.”
Ah yes, maybe CrossFit isn’t for you. Or maybe you should just try something else that promises quicker results, even if it’s not sustainable or effective long-term.

This “lying” coach says what you want to hear. They won’t challenge your mindset or push back on your excuses. They’ll nod, smile, and let you stay in your comfort zone because it’s easier to agree than to care enough to confront.

Which Coach Do You Prefer?

So now it’s your choice.
Do you want the coach who’s honest, who tells you the truth, holds you accountable, and refuses to let you quit on yourself?
Or do you want the coach who lies to you, who agrees with your excuses, tells you it’s fine to stop, and helps you stay exactly where you are?

At CrossFit Be Someone in Houston, our coaches choose honesty. Because our goal isn’t to make you comfortable, it’s to make you better. We care too much about your growth to let you settle for mediocrity.

The Role of a Coach

A great coach doesn’t just teach movements, they help you transform your life. Here’s what the role of a coach truly is:

We won’t lie to you. We won’t tell you what you want to hear. We’ll tell you what you need to hear because that’s what real coaching is.

At CrossFit Be Someone, we believe in developing strong bodies and stronger mindsets. And sometimes, that means having hard conversations about excuses, priorities, and consistency.

So, ask yourself again:

Do you want your coach to be honest with you, or lie to you?

If you’re ready for honesty, the kind that changes you for the better, we’ll be waiting for you here at CrossFit Be Someone in Houston.
