How Do You Handle the Heat During Workouts?

One of the most common questions we get every summer at CrossFit Be Someone is, "How do I deal with the heat during workouts?"

The answer is simple, but it is not always easy.

You prepare for it.

There is no secret supplement, magic cooling device, or shortcut that makes Houston summers feel comfortable inside a warehouse gym. It gets hot. We all know it. You feel it, your classmates feel it, and your coaches feel it too.

The difference between having a great workout and having a miserable experience often comes down to how you prepare, what you focus on, and how you respond to the situation.

Hydrate Throughout the Entire Day

One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to hydrate only when they arrive at the gym.

By the time you feel thirsty, you are already behind.

Proper hydration starts the moment you wake up. It continues throughout your workday and should be a consistent habit every day, not just workout days.

Carry a water bottle with you. Drink water consistently throughout the day. If you know you have an afternoon or evening workout, start preparing early.

A good rule of thumb is to monitor the color of your urine. Pale yellow generally indicates good hydration, while dark yellow is often a sign that you need more fluids.

Eat Real Food

Nutrition plays a major role in how your body handles heat.

If your diet consists primarily of processed foods, fast food, sugary drinks, and convenience snacks, your body is not going to perform as well when conditions become challenging.

Focus on whole foods:

The better fuel you provide your body, the better it can regulate temperature, recover from workouts, and perform under stress.

Eat Plenty of Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables provide more than just vitamins and minerals.

Many fruits contain significant amounts of water that can contribute to hydration.

Some great options include:

Vegetables also contain valuable minerals and electrolytes that support performance and hydration.

Think of fruits and vegetables as another tool that helps prepare your body for the heat.

Hydrate During Your Workout

Just because class has started does not mean hydration stops.

Take water breaks when appropriate.

There is no championship belt awarded for refusing to drink water during a workout.

Listen to your body and stay ahead of dehydration.

Some athletes also benefit from adding electrolytes, especially if they are heavy sweaters or training multiple days in a row.

Use Cooling Strategies

A few simple strategies can help lower your body temperature before, during, or after a workout.

Some options include:

These strategies will not eliminate the heat, but they can help improve comfort and recovery.

Consider Attending Morning Classes

If your schedule allows for it, one of the easiest ways to reduce your exposure to the hottest part of the day is to attend a morning class.

In Houston, temperatures can climb quickly throughout the day. While a warehouse gym will still be warm in the morning, it is often significantly more comfortable than training during the late afternoon when the sun has been beating down on the building for hours.

Many of our athletes choose to train in our morning classes during the summer months for this exact reason.

Morning workouts also provide several additional benefits:

That said, if mornings are not realistic for your schedule, do not use that as a reason to avoid training. The best class time is still the one that you can consistently attend.

The goal is not perfection. The goal is consistency.

However, if you have flexibility in your schedule and the summer heat is something you struggle with, moving your workout to an earlier class can make a noticeable difference in your overall experience while still allowing you to get all the benefits of training.

Focus on What You Can Control

Now let's talk about what does not work.

Complaining.

The moment you start focusing all of your attention on how hot it is, your workout becomes harder.

Yes, it is hot.

I understand that.

Your coaches understand that.

We are working out in the same environment you are.

But constantly talking about the heat does not cool the room down. It does not improve your performance. It does not make the workout shorter.

What it does do is shift your attention toward something you cannot control.

Instead, focus on what you can control:

When I coach classes during the summer, that is exactly where I place my focus.

Not on the temperature.

On the things that can actually improve the outcome.

The Heat Is Part of the Training

One of the beautiful things about CrossFit is that it regularly places us in uncomfortable situations.

Heavy barbells are uncomfortable.

Burpees are uncomfortable.

Running is uncomfortable.

The heat is uncomfortable.

But discomfort is where growth happens.

Every time you show up on a hot day and complete a workout, you are building more than just fitness.

You are developing resilience.

You are strengthening your mindset.

You are proving to yourself that difficult circumstances do not automatically dictate your performance.

That lesson extends far beyond the gym.

Life will eventually present challenges that are far more difficult than a hot workout.

The ability to remain calm, stay focused, and continue moving forward despite discomfort is a skill that transfers directly into parenting, careers, relationships, and personal challenges.

You flex your mindset muscle every time you walk into a hot gym, give your best effort, avoid complaining, and finish what you started.

Safety Is Always the Priority

While we embrace challenges, we never ignore safety.

At CrossFit Be Someone, our coaching staff is trained to recognize the signs and symptoms of heat-related illnesses.

We monitor athletes closely for signs of:

We know what to look for and how to respond appropriately should a situation arise.

If an athlete experiences heat cramps, we can intervene early with rest, hydration, and cooling measures. If someone begins showing signs of heat exhaustion, such as excessive sweating, dizziness, nausea, headache, weakness, or rapid heart rate, we know how to respond and when further medical attention may be necessary.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency and requires immediate action. Symptoms can include confusion, altered mental status, loss of consciousness, and a dangerously elevated body temperature. Our coaches are trained to recognize these warning signs and take appropriate action immediately.

Our goal is to challenge athletes while maintaining a safe training environment.

That means educating our members, encouraging proper hydration, and staying vigilant during the hottest months of the year.

Final Thoughts

The heat is not going anywhere.

Every summer in Houston brings long days, high humidity, and challenging workout conditions.

Instead of fighting reality, prepare for it.

Hydrate throughout the day.

Eat whole foods.

Consume plenty of fruits and vegetables.

Drink water during workouts.

Use cooling strategies when needed.

Consider attending morning classes if your schedule allows.

Focus on what you can control.

Most importantly, continue showing up.

The heat may challenge you, but it can also help build a stronger body and a stronger mindset when approached the right way.

The truth is that most people run from discomfort. At CrossFit Be Someone, we learn how to face it. Every hot workout completed is another opportunity to build confidence, resilience, discipline, and mental toughness.

Those qualities do not just make you a better athlete. They make you better prepared for the challenges that life inevitably brings.
