Not Understanding Why Technique is Important

One of the most common and most overlooked pain points in fitness is not understanding proper technique. It doesn’t matter if someone is brand new to working out or has been training for years. Without a solid foundation in movement quality, progress is limited and frustration builds quickly. Many individuals assume that effort alone is enough, but in reality, how you move is just as important as how hard you work.

When proper technique is missing, the first thing that suffers is efficiency. Every movement in fitness, whether it’s a squat, deadlift, or overhead press, has an optimal pattern designed to produce the most power with the least wasted energy. Without guidance, people tend to compensate by using the wrong muscles, moving out of alignment, or rushing through reps. This results in energy leaks, meaning you’re working harder than necessary for less output. Over time, this inefficiency stalls progress and makes workouts feel more difficult than they should.

Beyond inefficiency, poor technique significantly increases the risk of injury. The body is resilient, but it is not indestructible. Repeating flawed movement patterns, especially under load or intensity, places unnecessary stress on joints, ligaments, and muscles. A rounded back in a deadlift, knees collapsing inward during a squat, or unstable shoulders in pressing movements are all examples of small errors that can lead to bigger problems. Injuries don’t just pause progress. They often set individuals back weeks or even months, creating a cycle of stop and go training that is both discouraging and avoidable.

Another major consequence of improper technique is the lack of continued development. Fitness is built on progression, but progression requires a strong foundation. If the basics aren’t sound, advancing to heavier weights or more complex movements becomes unsafe or ineffective. Many athletes hit plateaus not because they aren’t working hard enough, but because their movement quality can’t support the next level. Without correction, they stay stuck, repeating the same workouts without meaningful improvement.

Imbalances are also a direct result of poor movement patterns. When technique is off, the body naturally shifts work to stronger or more dominant muscle groups. Over time, this creates asymmetry, with one side working harder than the other or certain muscles becoming overdeveloped while others lag behind. These imbalances not only affect performance but also increase injury risk and limit overall athletic potential. A well rounded athlete isn’t just strong. They move evenly, efficiently, and with control.

All of these issues, inefficiency, injury risk, stalled progress, and imbalances, ultimately lead to one thing, frustration. It’s frustrating to put in consistent effort and not see results. It’s frustrating to feel like workouts are harder than they should be. And it’s especially frustrating to deal with nagging aches or setbacks that could have been prevented. For many people, this frustration is what causes them to lose motivation or quit altogether.

This is exactly why we place such a strong emphasis on movement quality at CrossFit Be Someone. We understand that great results don’t come from simply working harder. They come from moving better. Coaching proper technique isn’t an afterthought for us. It is the foundation of everything we do.

In both our CrossFit group training and personal training environments, coaching is constant and intentional. We don’t just tell athletes what to do. We show them how to do it correctly, and we reinforce those standards every single session. Whether it’s refining a squat, improving barbell mechanics, or helping someone understand how to stabilize their core, we are always focused on developing better movement patterns.

Our approach is rooted in the belief that every athlete, regardless of experience level, deserves high quality coaching. Beginners need it to build confidence and avoid bad habits, while experienced athletes need it to break through plateaus and reach new levels of performance. There is no stage in fitness where technique stops mattering.

What truly sets us apart is the depth of coaching knowledge within our team. We are proud to have one of the top coaches in the world, a CrossFit Level 4 trainer and a member of the CrossFit Seminar Staff, who brings an exceptional level of expertise to our community. More importantly, that knowledge isn’t kept at the top. It is consistently shared and passed down to every coach on our team.

This commitment to coach development ensures that our athletes benefit from a unified, high level approach to movement. Our coaches are not just leading workouts. They are continuously learning, refining their eye for detail, and improving their ability to communicate and correct movement effectively. This directly impacts our athletes, as better coaching leads to better movement, which leads to better results.

At the end of the day, fitness is not just about intensity or volume. It is about quality. When athletes move well, everything changes. Workouts become more effective, progress becomes more consistent, and confidence grows. Injuries become less frequent, imbalances are addressed, and frustration is replaced with a sense of accomplishment.

Understanding and applying proper technique is the key that unlocks long term success in fitness. It’s not always the most glamorous part of training, but it is undoubtedly the most important. That’s why we prioritize it every day, with every athlete, in every session.

Because when you move well, you don’t just work out. You build something that lasts.
